Background on Taiwan’s earthquake history

Because the island is located near the junction of two tectonic plates, the country is regularly hit by earthquakes.

In September 1999, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Taiwan, killing approximately 2,400 people, making it the worst natural disaster in the island’s history.

Earthquakes occur frequently in Japan, with approximately 1,500 tremors being felt each year.

Most are mild, but the damage they cause depends on the depth of the epicenter below the surface and its location.

The intensity of a tsunami, a vast and potentially destructive series of waves that can move at hundreds of kilometers per hour, also depends on multiple factors.

In Japan and Taiwan, even larger earthquakes usually cause little damage, thanks to special construction techniques and strict building regulations.

Japan has also developed advanced procedures and techniques to warn and evacuate people if necessary.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Japan was a magnitude 9.0 earthquake that occurred off the northeast coast of Japan in March 2011, causing a tsunami that left approximately 18,500 people dead or missing.

In the 2011 disaster, three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant also went into meltdown, causing the worst post-war disaster and the most serious nuclear accident since Chernobyl.
