A Texas housewife said she was shocked to learn there was a warrant out for her arrest for not returning library books.
Kayleigh Morgan said she borrowed an oversized book about Vincent van Gogh for home study in 2023.
She heard the bad news after trying to renew her driver’s license and being refused.
“When I got there, I was told that I couldn’t renew because there was a warrant for my arrest,” said the mother of five.
he told KPRC-TV. “I’m just shocked. I literally laughed out loud. I said it had to be a joke, but it wasn’t.”
Morgan admitted that she was unable to return the books in a timely manner because she was pregnant at the time, had complications, and was also moving to a new home, and did not receive notification that the books were delayed. . But she feels the consequences she faces are too severe.
She was charged with theft of government property and had to drive hours away to plead her case to a judge. Ms Morgan said the judge was not at all sympathetic to her explanation.
“It wasn’t a pleasant experience,” she told KPRC.
Morgan told the judge that her husband tried to return the book, but it wouldn’t go in the return box, and when he got there, the library was closed so he couldn’t go inside. After returning the books, they had moved and believed the problem had been resolved, so they received no notification. But that wasn’t the case.
“She told me to stop making excuses. I need to take responsibility,” Morgan explained. “She said that since we moved, it was my responsibility to update the library to reflect my change of address.”
She offered to pay for the book, but the judge said that point was long gone.
