7.5 Earthquake Strikes Taiwan’s East Coast

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck the east coast of Taiwan off the coast of Japan’s southern island.

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off Taiwan’s east coast on Tuesday, prompting a tsunami warning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake started with a magnitude of 7.5, followed by aftershocks of magnitude 7.4, and is said to have caused numerous buildings to collapse and chaos in the area.

Authorities urged residents to evacuate immediately.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for Miyakojima and the Okinawa Islands. The agency also warned that waves as high as 3 meters (9.84252 feet) were expected soon.

Damage caused by the earthquake is still being investigated.
