As Elon Musk’s social media platform X/Twitter continues to struggle with an exodus of advertisers, another issue has come to the forefront: the proliferation of pornographic content on the site.
bloomberg report Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter, has long been known for its tolerance for provocative content. However, in recent months, the platform has seen a significant increase in adult content, largely due to Musk’s decision to cut back on his content moderation team. This proliferation of porn is not only causing concern among users, but also threatens to further undermine Musk’s efforts to win back advertisers who have fled the platform since he took over ownership.
According to John Herman, new york magazine, one particularly viral post on X includes the phrase “cat in bio,” which often leads users to simple scams. These posts are frequently generated by porn spambots and lure lonely individuals to follow a series of links, promising to connect with local singles. The ease with which such scams spread on the platform highlights X/Twitter’s inability to effectively combat this problem at scale.

Beyond the “PIB” scam, X has become a haven for OnlyFans creators looking to promote themselves. Even before Musk’s acquisition, Twitter had a permissive content policy that allowed pornography if it was properly labeled and restricted from certain high-profile areas, but the current situation with X/Twitter It’s escalating. Herrman reports that the platform is currently flooded with posts promoting OnlyFans agencies. The agencies are essentially OnlyFans creator accounts staffed by call center employees who pretend to be real people and operate in a similar fashion to cheating sites.
The prevalence of pornography and porn-related spam on X/Twitter presents a potential growth opportunity for the troubled company. But it also risks further alienating advertisers already wary of the platform’s content moderation issues. Even worse, when such content becomes widespread, it can turn off users and cause them to leave your site. Many Twitter users have complained about the level of his porn spam and his Onlyfans ads when they are simply trying to view and participate in comment his threads.
X/Twitter’s dismantling of its content moderation team has had a clear impact on the spread of pornographic content. The recent incident in which a deepfake porn video of Taylor Swift went viral highlighted the platform’s lack of response, with the platform simply blocking searches for the celebrity’s name for several days.
Breitbart News recently reported that X is testing a feature that would allow users to create or join communities around “adult content” or other “not safe for work” (NSFW) material. The move comes as part of the platform’s efforts to differentiate itself from other mainstream social networking services while ensuring user safety.
Users who create communities within the X/Twitter app can now set their groups to “contain adult content,” according to screenshots revealed by Watchful analyst Daniel Buchuk. It is possible to specify. These X groups will be labeled “adult content” and users who don’t properly label their communities may have some content filtered or removed.
