After releasing star edge rusher Brian Burns to the New York Giants in March, Carolina appears ready to rebuild its defense around the 25-year-old stopgap. (Related article: The NFL team everyone thought had given up on him made a super solid contract)
The Panthers, who spent a first-round pick on Brown in 2020, are clearly pleased with the defensive tackle’s performance.
Brown earned Pro Bowl honors for the first time in his career in 2023 after a great season as one of the lone bright spots in Carolina’s 2-15 campaign.
The fearsome lineman was named to Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) Top 100 list for the second straight season and was the Panthers’ only varsity player last season.
“Brown was a historically disruptive piece on the Panthers’ defensive line in 2023. He led all Interior defenders in defensive stops (53) and solo tackles (73) by PFF’s count. “His PFF run defense grade was an elite 90.0 and he missed just five tackles all season,” said PFF’s Sam Monson. The behemoth recorded an incredible 103 tackles last season and set a tackle record for a defensive lineman in 2023.
In the case of this production, less than $100 million actually seems like a steal.
