A fire broke out outside Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Burlington, Vermont, office on Friday, and police believe it may have been an arsonist.
No injuries were reported, but members of the independent senator’s staff were in the building when a “significant fire” appeared to have broken out.
“The massive fire consumed part of the door and entrance, preventing staff working in the office from leaving and putting their lives at risk.” The Burlington Police Department said in a statement..
“The sprinkler system was then activated and the fire was largely extinguished.”
Authorities believe the male suspect poured accelerant on the door, then set it on fire and fled the scene.
The suspect remains at large and police are unsure of a motive.
Burlington police released an image of a man wanted in connection with the fire wearing an orange beanie, black sweater, brown pants and white Nike sneakers.
Police said Sanders was not in his office at the time of the fire, which occurred around 10:45 a.m.
Police said the sprinkler system activated, causing “significant” water damage to the building and “moderate” fire damage to the senator’s office door.
Sanders’ office did not respond to The Post’s request for comment.
