Colorado county passes emergency measure to fine, seize buses dropping off migrants

A Colorado county passed an emergency ordinance Tuesday that allows sheriff’s departments to issue fines and seize buses that drop off illegal immigrants. KDVR report.

Douglas County is taking steps to get ahead of the growing influx of migrants, out of concern that Denver officials are likely to bus individuals to surrounding areas.

The sanctuary city of Denver recently began closing many public migrant shelters as part of a “consolidation” plan that will save a reported $60 million, Blaze News previously reported. Following the closure announcement, Denver city officials asked property owners to open up their rental homes to immigrant “newcomers” as a long-term housing solution.

“Denver was the first Democratic city in the country to jump on the anti-Trump bandwagon by declaring itself a sanctuary city,” Thiel said. “We’re not a Democratic county. We’re a mostly Republican community. We were never meant to be a sanctuary county.”

“We know it’s only a matter of time before Denver starts diverting buses here to Douglas County. We’re south of Denver, right between Denver and Colorado Springs. And that’s why this “That’s why we enacted the ordinance, so that when it happens, we’ll be ready,” Thiel added.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston (D) insisted that all migrants living in shelters scheduled for closure would be moved to other accommodations.

“As we all have researched and learned, President Trump is no longer president, at least not yet,” Thiel continued. “Now it’s President Biden, one of their Democrats. And yet they’re still continuing policies that they’re starting to regret.”

“No more freeloaders,” Thiel said, noting the county’s new ordinance will ensure community safety. The measure would impose fines of up to $40,000 on buses that drop off “commercial passengers” at “unplanned locations.” Buses can also be impounded by local police if they are deemed to be a “public nuisance.”

County commissioners told KDVR that so far, no buses of migrants have been offloaded in the area.

“We’re going to be very proactive and make sure that bus companies just bring buses to Douglas County because we don’t have shelter in Douglas County,” County Commissioner Laura Thomas told the news outlet. I want to try not to think about it,” he said.

The county said it plans to contact Texas bus companies and let them know they are not allowed to drop off migrants in the area.
