Greta Thunberg arrested at climate protest in The Hague

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested Saturday at a climate change protest in The Hague, Netherlands.

According to the Associated Press, Thunberg was one of dozens of people detained by police during the process of clearing protesters who were blocking a section of road in The Hague.

She was seen flashing a victory sign on a bus used by police to transport demonstrators from protests against subsidies and tax cuts for companies linked to the fossil fuel industry. It was done.

Ahead of the protest, the Extinction Rebellion group announced that activists would block the highway entering The Hague. However, large numbers of police initially prevented them from moving onto the roads.

Eventually, a smaller number of people sat on another road and police detained them after they refused to comply with orders to leave, the Associated Press reported.

“We can’t stop it, another world is possible,” the demonstrators shouted.

Earlier this year, a London court acquitted a young Swedish climate activist who disobeyed police orders to leave during a protest last year that blocked entry to an important oil and gas industry conference, the Associated Press reported. .

Last February, Thunberg wrote an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times in which she said world leaders were “not moving in the right direction” on climate change.

“The popular argument that there is not enough money has been disproved time and time again,” Thunberg wrote. “According to the International Monetary Fund, the production and combustion of coal, oil, and fossil gases was subsidized by $5.9 trillion in 2020 alone, which is equivalent to $11 million per minute that destroys the planet.” It will be spent on.”
