Barry Trotz makes UBS Arena return as Predators GM

Barry Trotz and Anthony Beauvillier looked at each other Friday night as the Predators prepared to go out for a team dinner.

The team wanted to go into the city by bus.

These two knew each other well.

“They didn’t listen to me,” Trotz said. “And I think Bo was trying to influence them. [former Ranger] Ryan McDonough. Too many people had never spent too much time in New York and were intimidated by this train, that train, etc. ”

“We ran into traffic,” Beauvillier said. “Somewhat. I suggested the train, but… [they] I guess you didn’t want to hear it. ”

“I think there are lessons to be learned,” Trotz added. “I stopped by the team room this morning and they were like, ‘We should have listened to you and Beau.’

Trotz, who coached the Islanders for four seasons from 2018 to 2022, told this story Saturday morning while standing in the lower bowl of UBS Arena, surrounded by a small group of reporters and watching his new team skate. Told.

The game against the Islanders was his first with the team since becoming the Predators’ general manager after being fired by coach Lou Lamoriello following a disappointing 2021-22 season.

Unsurprisingly, then, Trotz held court for nearly 45 minutes.

“I thought I wouldn’t get anything. [fan] Reception,” he said. “Frankly, I don’t mind being anonymous. Maybe I’ll watch the game there, but you won’t be able to see me anyway. I said hello to some old friends. I would like to have the opportunity to do so.”

But of course, it was inevitable that the night would be about Trotz. Trotz is a likely future Hall of Famer who held the Islanders to within one goal in one game and scored one short goal in the first Stanley Cup Final since 1984.

Many of his players are still with the Islanders, and Beauvillier, another key player from this era, is now with the Predators.

And the last time the franchise had real success, at least in terms of winning a playoff series, was with Trotz behind the bench.

“When I came to the Island, I knew I could take the franchise back,” said Trotz, who engineered a turnaround from 80 points in his first year to 103 points. game. And I thought I was up for the challenge. Coming from Washington, I found it difficult to go from Nashville to Washington and leave my mark on that organization and that team. The next challenge falls on the islanders and they hope to leave a mark by teaching young people life lessons. ”

Two years after Trotz left the team, the lessons still loom large as the Islanders battle for a playoff spot.

We don’t know what will happen, but it seems likely that Game 7 of the 2021 NHL Semifinals represents this group’s best shot at cup play.

And now it has become an everlasting memory.

“My most memorable years will probably be the two years of COVID-19,” Trotz said. ” [2020] I think we did a really good job in the bubble and it was a unique time for our players to understand that. When you talk to retired players, they all say they miss the locker room, they miss the players, they miss dinner and things like that. we are blessed. I think our team took the attitude that it was a blessing. You weren’t going to go to jail.

“I think the attitude of the team and the closeness of the group was exceptional. And the following year, we were a team with limited strength.” [fans] And it started to get more exciting again. …I thought it was the best hockey. To actually be in one of the coronavirus epicenters in New York during a really strange time and witness how a city as big as New York has had to deal with it was really It’s a good memory.

“It was unique. I consider it a really unique life experience. It was a strange time, but when you tell your kids 10 years later that this happened, they say, ‘What?’ Masu. what are you talking about? ‘It’s what you made it. ”
