Diplomatic Breakup as Ecuadoran Cops Storm Mexican Embassy

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ordered the end of all diplomatic relations with Ecuador shortly after Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican embassy.

The diplomatic turmoil erupted in Quito, Ecuador, on Friday night, when police arrested former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Gras Espinel, a fugitive from justice who had applied for political asylum and was staying at the Mexican embassy.

Glass Espinel served as the country’s vice president from 2013 until 2017, when he was removed from office amid a bribery scandal. Since then, he has been convicted in multiple bribery cases and received various sentences.

The Mexican government condemned the attack and claimed that Ecuadorian police assaulted Mexican diplomatic staff. Roberto Canseco, head of the Mexican embassy in Ecuador, claimed he was beaten by police when he tried to physically prevent them from entering the building.

The Ecuadorian government issued a statement defending their actions, claiming that Glass Espinel had previously been convicted of various corruption crimes and was therefore a criminal and not subject to political persecution.The former politician had been staying at the Mexican embassy since December after applying for asylum, claiming he was being targeted by the current government, Reuters said. report. Ecuadorian authorities asked the Mexican government several weeks ago for permission to enter the embassy and arrest Glass Espinel, but were denied.
