Spencer Strider has ‘damage’ in right elbow in latest Braves nightmare

The Braves’ starting rotation took a big hit Saturday.

All-Star Spencer Strider underwent an MRI scan on Saturday that revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the right-handed pitcher’s throwing elbow. the team announced.

The Braves also said Strider will be further evaluated by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas.

Last year, the Braves, who recorded the most wins (20) and strikeouts (281) in the MLB, suffered discomfort in their right elbow in overtime of their home opener win over the Diamondbacks, and the starting pitcher was withdrawn early. On Friday, there was anxiety within the team.

The 25-year-old Strider lasted only four innings, allowing five runs, including a home run, on seven hits and three walks, while striking out four.

“I thought it was one of those nights,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Strider after the win. “Then he came in and was complaining about his elbow. … He was feeling uncomfortable about it.”

This was the eighth time in Strider’s 54 major league starts that he was forced to leave after four innings. It was also the sixth time he failed to record at least five strikeouts as a starter.

Whether he’s out short-term or long-term, it’s a big hole to fill for the Braves, who are off to a 4-2 start and sit atop the National League East.

Strider started only two games, including the opening day game against the Phillies, and threw 90 pitches in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks.

Last season, he went 20-5 with a 3.86 ERA and finished fourth in National League Cy Young Award voting.
