Masters preview:
The first major championship has arrived as Augusta National is in full bloom. 89 players will compete for the green his jacket and bragging rights.
Among the 89 players, 13 LIV golfers include former Masters champions Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Charles Schwartzel, Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed, and defending champion Jon Rahm. is participating.
Joaquin Niemann, Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith are three other LIV players who could do well at Augusta National.
Niemann is on fire this season with two wins in LIV golf events. He received a special invitation to play in the Masters. Niemann wants to prove a point, so keep an eye on this Chilian.
But Brooks Koepka should scare the rest of the players on the field. He almost won the Masters last year and also won the PGA Championship. Koepka wants the green jackets to fail, and this could be the year that happens.
Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 golfer, has two wins already this season, with back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Scheffler fell just short at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, but his game was nearly unbeatable. He didn’t win three in a row because of a few putts.
Scheffler is also keeping an eye on the second green jacket. He has momentum, and it will be interesting to see if Scheffler shows up at Augusta National with a beard.
Rory McIlroy is attempting another career Grand Slam at Augusta National. He recently took lessons from legendary coach Butch Harmon and will compete at the Valero Texas Open in preparation for the Masters. The four-time major winner already has a win on the DP World Tour, but he had never finished inside the top 10 in any PGA Tour event entering this weekend’s Valero Texas Open.
Swedish phenom Ludvig Oberg will be making his Masters debut, but don’t count him out. His game is made for Augusta. He might shock the world this week. Viktor Hovland enjoyed success last year, finishing T7th, and is looking to build on that in 2024. Don’t overlook him as he is growing at Augusta National while struggling to find his swing under a new coach.
Of course, Tiger Woods will be in the field, playing for the first time since Genesis’ departure. Can he keep this up and do something special, or will the golf world see him go home Friday night?
This field attracts some of the best golfers and has a wealth of stories to tell. The winner of the tournament will be determined by who can stay on the fairway and limit their mistakes. Who will wear the green jacket on Sunday?
