Virginia State Police recently released shocking body camera footage of a chaotic “street hijacking” that left one officer injured.
Around 3 a.m. on March 31, hundreds of people gathered at a car rally in Springfield, Virginia, to watch drivers do donuts and drive recklessly.
But the car display caused “utter chaos and disorder”.
fairfax county police Said“A large group of people surrounded the officer’s cruiser. At least one person attempted to remove the license plate from the vehicle while others acted disorderly.”
Unruly people reportedly jumped on police cars and banged on the vehicle’s windows.
Law enforcement said a man was outside the police vehicle with a rifle.
The driver allegedly hit the officer with his vehicle and fled the scene.
The police officer reportedly suffered minor injuries.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said“We believe we narrowly escaped a death-in-the-line scenario of our own, because one of our police officers was surrounded by a group of masked tough-guy wannabe thugs, surrounding her car and committing a crime. Let me tell you, something like this will never happen again in Fairfax County. ”
Mr Davis praised the officer for showing “tremendous kindness under pressure in a very volatile scenario”.
“So what does this mean for the residential and business communities? Your neighborhood, your There were no police officers to protect your community, your business,” Davis declared.
Davis said he believed the rioters had “full intent” to pull the female officer from her car and harm her.
He added: “Fortunately they didn’t get into the car and we’re very grateful for that.”
According to law enforcement, four people have been criminally charged in the horrific incident.
The suspect in the hit-and-run was identified as 18-year-old Ronal Urrea Hernandez, according to reports. WTTG. Police reportedly obtained warrants for his arrest on charges of felony hit and run, speeding and no driver’s license.
Carlos A. Martinez Jr., 18, was arrested and charged with reckless driving after driving the wrong way on the road and crashing into his cruiser, the newspaper reported.
Authorities are also searching for the suspect, Dylan Heckard, 20, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He is charged with assault on law enforcement and kidnapping for allegedly jumping on a police cruiser and preventing officers from leaving.
A 17-year-old was charged, but his identity has not been released because he is a minor.
“I will never again be involved in a situation where it’s one of us versus dozens of people trying to harm us,” Davis declared.
