As John Calipari prepares to leave Kentucky for SEC rival Arkansas, Kendra Randle, wife of injured Knicks star and former Wildcats standout Julius Randle, The soon-to-be former Kentucky coach shared a heartwarming story.
“Four years ago, my grandmother was seriously ill in a small hospital in eastern Kentucky.” Kendra tweeted News of Calipari’s impending retirement broke Sunday night.
“Julius called Coach Cal and asked if he knew anyone who could take her to a UK hospital. Fifteen minutes later she was on a helicopter to England, and I still remember how he feared for her life. I believe I saved him.”
Kendra, who married Julius in 2017, added on her Instagram Story: Just one example of how much he truly loves his players. We love our coaches! ”
Kendra and Julius met for just one year, during the 2013-14 season, when the former was in college. According to weddingstylemagazine.com.
Julius thrived under Calipari, leading the Wildcats to the national title game in 2014, but Kentucky fell 60-54 in the title game in its last appearance.
That same year, he averaged 15 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game and was selected by the Lakers in the seventh pick of the 2014 NBA Draft.
Kendra’s tweet shows that Calipari remains an important figure in their lives.
Randle called Calipari “the best in the business” in 2019 and talked about the lessons Calipari taught him during his lonely year in Lexington.
“One of the bigger things is accountability. I think that’s helped me not just in the NBA, but in life as well. Be accountable for your actions, for going out and doing things,” Randle said. “You are responsible for the outcome you want. You can’t put it on other people. You have to go out there and take responsibility. That’s one of the biggest things I learned. That’s one.”
In fact, Randle referred to Calipari in that interview as “the king over there,” referring to Lexington, but he won’t be at the top of Kentucky’s throne anytime soon.
A close relationship with billionaire Tyson Foods chairman and Arkansas benefactor John H. Tyson, along with a feeling of being unwanted, led Mr. Calipari to leave the Wildcats for the Razorbacks. It is reported that.
The five-year deal between Calipari and Arkansas is scheduled to close on Monday. According to ESPN.
