Federal authorities are asking a Manhattan judge to postpone the corruption trial of Sen. Bob Menendez and his wife for at least two months, citing the spouse’s health.
Prosecutors on Wednesday sent a letter to the judge overseeing Nadine Menendez’s case, moving the May 6 trial to July after Nadine Menendez’s lawyers submitted documentation about her serious health condition. They asked that it be postponed until August.
Nadine’s lawyers said her condition requires surgery within four to six weeks, adding that she is not in a “physical or mental condition” to request an indefinite postponement.
Prosecutors said the office “takes unexpected medical developments seriously” and said the Garden State Democrat supported a several-month hiatus to care for his wife. However, federal authorities opposed a long-term suspension.
The Menendez couple are charged with 18 criminal counts related to a massive bribery scheme in which Paul accepted gold bullion and cash in exchange for favors he provided to wealthy friends.
Menendez is also suspected of acting as a foreign agent for the Egyptian government.
