It has been reported that some birds in New York City parks and green spaces have been detected to be infected with avian influenza.

Philip Mead, a postdoctoral fellow at the Icahn School of Medicine, said avian influenza was found in several geese, peregrine falcons, red-tailed hawks and chickens at Marcus Garvey Park in New York.

However, since 2022, only two people have been infected in the United States so far, including a case reported in Texas earlier this month, according to reports.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the patient in Texas had close contact with a dairy cow believed to be infected with H5N1. It also said the 2022 patient was a poultry worker in Colorado.

“You can’t walk past a sick goose and get avian influenza. That doesn’t work,” Mead said. “The only precaution everyone should take is to limit contact with wild animals… You shouldn’t run up to Canada geese and try to catch them.”

Health officials said the two recent human infections were both “mild.”

According to the CDC, “At this time, there is no evidence that avian influenza has spread among humans.”

For information about sick or dead raptors or waterfowl in the city, contact the state Department of Environmental Protection at (518) 478-2203 or (718) 482-4922. To report dead or sick poultry, call the state Department of Agriculture and Markets at (518) 457-3502.

If you notice 10 or more dead birds in one location, call 3-1-1.
