In his 15th season, Giancarlo Stanton accomplished something he had not been able to do in his previous 1,545 games: a home run against the Marlins.
In the sixth inning, the Yankees designated hitter hit a solo shot into the right field seats against Miami’s Brian Howing, making the number of teams sacrificed for home runs to 30.
“It’s pretty cool,” Stanton said after the 5-2 loss to the Marlins in the Bronx. “I’ve heard people do it over the years and since I was a kid watching it.”
Stanton spent his first eight seasons with Miami before being traded to the Yankees prior to the 2018 season. It took 15 games against his former team for Stanton to earn his spot and become the 15th active player to play against everyone on a list that also includes the Dodgers’ Mookie Betts and Met newcomer J.D. Martinez. did.
“I wasn’t thinking about it. Obviously, I wasn’t thinking about it,” Stanton said of the feat.
Stanton finished with one hit and one walk in three at-bats, and has three home runs in the past five games and four this season.
After a disastrous 2023 that saw him hit 24 home runs in 101 games and hit a .695 OPS, a slimmed-down Stanton is showing signs of life.
“I felt good,” Stanton said. “I feel like I have a solid foundation at bat.”
