The young founder of a cybersecurity research company died after fighting for his life for several days after being hit by a speeding SUV on the Upper East Side during rainy weather last week, police said.
Margin Research founder Sophia Dantoine, 30, died Friday, three days after being struck by a speeding 2017 Land Rover SUV about a half-block from her apartment, police said.
The horrific accident occurred as Dantoine was crossing York Avenue at East 87th Street on Tuesday, April 2, at approximately 9:30 p.m.
Police said the Land Rover, driven by a 72-year-old man, collided with Dantoine, then collided head-on with a taxi and then struck an unoccupied 2022 Ford Explorer SUV.
Records show Dantoine lived on East 87th Street, about a half block from where the tragic accident occurred. She founded Margin Research, a New York-based specialty research firm, in 2018, according to the company’s website.
A website for a cybersecurity event she previously attended referred to Dantoine as New York University’s “hacker-in-residence.”
Dantoine was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition after the accident and remained in critical condition for several days before dying from his injuries on Friday.
The 62-year-old taxi driver was taken to New York City Health Hospital Elmhurst in stable condition, and the Land Rover driver remained at the scene.
A review of traffic enforcement data showed that the Land Rover’s license plate had been stopped five times in three years for speeding in a school zone. Upper East Site.
According to the paper, the taxi involved in the incident had been caught on traffic cameras 13 times speeding in school zones within two years.
It is unclear whether rainy weather at the time of the crash played a role.
The NYPD has not arrested anyone in the case, but the investigation is still ongoing.
