Democrat-Run St. Louis Enters ‘Doom Loop’

“The business district is deserted, lined with boarded-up towers, copper thieves and failing retail stores,” the newspaper reported. wall street journal He is from St. Louis, Missouri, which is run by the Democratic Party. “[E]Even if the Panera outlet shuts down. The city is desperately trying to reverse the “loop of destruction.” ”

Let’s take a look at the history of the doomed mayor of St. Louis.

Oh, and St. Louis hasn’t had a Republican mayor since–that’s not a typo– 1949. For 75 years, the people of St. Louis have been voting “More of the Same,” so excuse me for not playing the violin to get us through this inevitable loop of doom.

“Cities like San Francisco and Chicago are trying to save their downtown business districts from a loop of doom,” the paper wrote. wall street journal. “Saint. Louis has already fallen into that trap.”

of journal Note:

Offices are empty, stores and restaurants are closed, and abandoned buildings are hollow, sucking the life out of the streets around them. Locals often find boarded-up buildings depressing and empty sidewalks scary. So even fewer people commute downtown.

This self-reinforcing cycle has accelerated in recent years as the pandemic emptied offices. St. Louis’ central business district experienced the steepest decline in pedestrian traffic among 66 major North American cities from the start of the pandemic to last summer, according to the University of Toronto’s School of Urban Studies. Traffic has improved somewhat over the past 12 months, but at a slower rate than in many Midwestern cities.

In the immortal words of Jerry Seinfeld: Yes, that’s a shame.

In 2006, the AT&T Tower building downtown was sold for $205 million. It was sold for $4 million in 2022.

Crime is obviously a problem.of wall street journal Smokers in barbecue joints with bullet holes in them, businesses already struggling to pay for private security, broken windows, graffiti and deserted roads filled with reckless drivers, destroyed by homeless people and copper thieves. The city is restructuring by giving $50,000 in cash grants to small businesses opening downtown. There’s a campaign called “Add landscaping, bike lanes, and traffic barriers.”

Kurt Weigle of Greater St. Louis said the idea is to “get more people involved in positive activities on the streets.” wall street journal.

Democrats can either do something about cutting crime, taxes, and regulation, or they can’t. That’s what it comes down to. Bike lanes in cities where people drive like madmen make about as much sense as screen doors on a submarine.

I lived in the mid-80s in the downtown Midwest for several years. There’s nothing like a vibrant, safe downtown atmosphere with lots of people and plenty of things to do, including free entertainment options like libraries, bookstores, and museums. This didn’t have to happen in St. Louis or San Francisco. Over the past century, Americans have learned how to govern modern cities and reduce crime. These policy shifts were deliberate decisions by Democrats. The fact that these Democrats remain in power is a deliberate decision made by voters. None of them deserve your sympathy.
