Masters: Phil Mickelson reveals “unique” Bryson DeChambeau approach as Lefty falls flat

It’s no secret that Bryson DeChambeau has a different style.

He analyzes the game differently, uses the same length for all his irons, and often uses complex formulas to navigate the golf course.

Known as “The Scientist,” DeChambeau’s mannerisms have made him a polarizing figure, but six-time major champion Phil Mickelson has long admired his style.

On Thursday, after Mickelson’s 1-over 73, reporters asked “Lefty” about DeChambeau’s changes and maturity.

“I’ve felt that way about him for a long time. He’s one of the smartest people I know, one of the most talented players I know, probably He’s one of the hardest working players,” Mickelson said.

“He has found a unique way to play golf, unlike anyone I have ever seen play. He has the determination and confidence to continue down this path that he knows is right for him, regardless of what people say. I care about him a lot and I have a lot of respect for him.”

DeChambeau paraded around Augusta National on Thursday, relying on his unique approach to shoot a 7-under 65 and take the first-round lead. His best finish at the Masters was a tie for 21st place as an amateur in 2016.

Mickelson, on the other hand, is eight shots behind after missing many chances in the first round.

“I hit a lot of good shots. I hit some good putts, too. I actually have a good feel for my game,” Mickelson said.

“I feel like I’m hitting the ball well. I feel like I’m winding it up pretty well. I just have to take what the course gives me. There are some holes where I have a pin birdie opportunity, and I’m going to take that.” I feel like I’m playing well enough to take advantage. I have three rounds left. I’m looking forward to it. This week is always fun.”

The three-time Masters champion was at 1 under for most of the day, but two bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes dropped him to 1 over. He will look to bounce back on Friday and go after DeChambeau, who played better than anyone.
