Afghan on Terrorist Watchlist Twice Freed into U.S.

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has twice released Afghan immigrants into the United States who were later found to be on federal terror watch lists. report This was revealed by NBC News.

Mohammad Karwin, 48, a member of the terrorist group Hezb-e-Islam and an Afghan national, crossed the U.S.-Mexico border for the first time on March 10, 2023, near San Ysidro, California.

NBC News said Border Patrol agents had reason to believe Mr. Kerwin was on the government’s terrorist watch list, but lacked accurate information about his ties to Hezb-e-Islam. As a result, Kerwin was released into the interior of the United States as part of Biden’s extensive catch-and-release network.

Kerwin was placed in Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Alternative Detention (ATD) program, which requires immigrants to check in with the agency via a geo-tracking system after being released into U.S. soil. .

Like millions of other immigrants released by Biden’s Department of Homeland Security, Kerwin was allowed to apply for asylum and a work permit to get a job in the United States. Officials told NBC News that Kerwin is also cleared to fly within the United States on domestic commercial flights.

In February, nearly a year after he was released into the U.S. interior, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) learned that ICE agents had linked Kerwin to terrorism in his native Afghanistan.

On February 28, Kerwin was arrested by ICE agents in San Antonio, Texas. The following month, on March 28, Kerwin appeared before a federal immigration judge, but he was reportedly not provided with any information regarding the immigrants’ ties to terrorism.

Kerwin was then allowed to be released from ICE custody on March 30 after paying just $12,000. The judge who granted Mr. Kerwin’s release did not impose any restrictions, only requiring the immigrant to appear in court the following year.

According to NBC News, ICE officials have not appealed the judge’s decision. Only after the report was released did DHS officials confirm that Kerwin was returned to federal custody following his arrest Thursday.

“At the time of the initial encounter, the information in the record could not provide a definitive match,” a DHS official told NBC News. “As soon as information was obtained suggesting this individual was a cause for concern, he was taken into custody by ICE. Law enforcement is following this matter closely to prevent any public safety risks.” .”
