Stolen 18-wheeler crashes into Texas DPS office, 1 dead, multiple injured

The driver of a stolen 18-wheel commercial vehicle crashed into a Department of Public Safety office in Brenham, Texas, on Friday, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen others.

The crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the driver of the truck, Claynard Parker, 42, was being pursued by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

The truck then made a “sharp right turn” and crashed into a driver’s license and auto service building, injuring multiple people and killing one, officials said. Parker was arrested at the scene.

Brenham is a city located between Austin and Houston.

License renewal refusal

Parker went to the same DPS office on Thursday and was denied the opportunity to renew his commercial driver’s license because he was ineligible. Officials were unclear why he was denied renewal.

Two people were airlifted to a hospital in Bryan, one person was taken with a life-threatening condition to Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, three people were taken to a hospital in Brenham, and eight people were treated and released at the scene, authorities said. .

Parker will face multiple charges, authorities said, without providing details.

Ms Kolkhorst, who grew up in Blenheim, said her office was in contact with local authorities.

“According to law enforcement, this appears to be an intentional criminal act, and the Texas Rangers will be leading the investigation,” she said in a statement. “This deliberate and heinous act is a reminder of the dangerous work performed by law enforcement and licensing agencies working to provide public safety and services.”

“We believe this was a criminal act,” Sheriff Otto Hanak told reporters.
