Judge Mary Marlow Sommer sentenced Hannah Gutierrez-Reed to 18 months in prison after a jury found her guilty of manslaughter.
The “Last” armorer was in charge of firearms on the Western set where cinematographer Halina Hutchins was shot and killed on October 21, 2021. Hutchins was preparing for a close-up shot when the gun held by Alec Baldwin went off. The 18-month sentence was the maximum time Gutierrez-Reed could serve. She has now spent about a month in prison.
“Despite all the fanfare and critics and accusations that have taken place over two years, we were able to select a jury of her peers who listened to the evidence received in court and We have determined the facts and found that the law can be applied,” Sommer said before handing down the sentence. “They found Mr. Gutierrez guilty of manslaughter.”
Sommer slammed Gutierrez-Reed’s jail phone call, noting that the armorer had told someone about “how this is ruining her modeling career.”
On March 6, a jury found Gutierrez-Reed guilty of manslaughter after a nearly two-week trial. Jurors heard from weapons experts, crew members and investigators during the trial.

“First and foremost, my heart hurts for Mr. Hutchin’s family, friends, and colleagues. My heart has been hurting since the day this tragedy occurred,” Gutierrez-Reed said in her opening statement during the trial. “Hailna has been and continues to be a source of inspiration to me. I understand that she was taken too soon and I pray that you all find peace. I am extremely grateful to have survived. My heart goes out to the film industry.” The devastating pain this tragedy has caused and the old wounds that have been reopened. ”
She added, “I am saddened that the media sensationalized our traumatic tragedy and painted me like a complete monster. In fact, it was the exact opposite of what was in my heart. ” he added.
“Sir, when I took on Rust, I was young and naive, but I took my job as seriously as I could,” Gutierrez-Reed said. “When the going got tough, I did my best to deal with it, even though I didn’t have the appropriate time, resources, or staffing. Today, I respectfully request that you consider probation.” I ask for probation so that I can continue to contribute to society through community service, and I am also welcome to continue counseling and attend any classes you think I need. I will abide by the rules and respect the terms of my probation, so please. The jury found me partially responsible for this terrible tragedy. It doesn’t make me a monster, it makes me human.”

Attorney Gloria Allred appeared at the sentencing hearing on behalf of Hutchins’ family and shared statements from the cinematographer’s mother, father, and sister.
“My life was split into two halves,” said Allred, reading for Hutchins’ mother. “Time does not heal. Time only prolongs my pain and suffering. I want those who committed the crime, those responsible for my daughter’s death, to be justly punished and given their just punishment. I hope he is sentenced. Justice must prevail.”
“It’s very, very difficult without her. I can’t do it. She graduated from college and gave birth to a wonderful boy, my grandson,” Hutchins’ mother said in a video translated from Ukrainian to English. Ta. “Unfortunately I can’t see him now. She was a wonderful mother. She really loved her job. The day of her death ruined my life. Without my mother. It’s heartbreaking to watch my child grow up.”
Hutchins’ father said in a statement: “The death of my daughter Halina on October 21, 2021 was a tragedy and the most bitter loss, not only in my life, but also in the lives of those close to me. There are no words to describe it. I can’t.” It expresses the soul-wrenching pain and suffering that I experience every day. A constant state of stress and confusion in the soul depleted his physical strength, and his health deteriorated sharply with continued physical pain in his heart. ”

Gutierrez-Reed’s attorney argued that Gutierrez-Reed’s “no criminal history,” her “personal character traits,” and the armorer’s young age made her ineligible for a prison sentence.
Gutierrez-Reed’s sentencing memorandum, filed April 10, listed all the reasons he shouldn’t spend time in prison, including his father’s cancer diagnosis. Gutierrez-Reed had been caring for Ser-Reed until his incarceration, according to Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys.
Prosecutors opposed Armorer’s plea for no jail time in a response filed April 12 and obtained by Fox News Digital.
The special prosecutor included a summary of a phone call in which Gutierrez-Reed called jurors “fucking idiots.” “Hannah says the jurors were too stupid to understand what was going on,” Kari Morrissey wrote. “She’s calling the jury idiots.”
“The State has designated Ms. Gutierrez as a serious violent offender and sentenced her to 18 years in the Department of Corrections for her recklessness in the face of knowledge that her conduct was reasonably likely to result in serious harm. “Based on New Mexico law (setting standards) requiring a sentence of one month in prison,” prosecutors wrote.
The state recommended that Gutierrez-Reed be given five years of probation if the judge issues a suspended or suspended sentence.

The jury deliberated for just under three hours on March 6 in New Mexico state court. After the verdict was read, Judge Mary Marlow Sommer ordered Gutierrez-Reed held in custody until his April 15 sentencing.
The armorer was also acquitted. tampering with evidencethe charges she received in 2023 came after investigators accused her of disguising a bag of cocaine on the day of the Set shooting.

Prosecutors primarily focused on Gutierrez-Reed’s actions as an armorer, arguing that she did not do her job properly.
“Hannah Gutierrez knew Baldwin was on the loose. She knew it,” special prosecutor Kari Morrissey said in closing arguments. “Even though it was her job, she didn’t do anything about it. That was her job, if you really want to call an A-list actor that. “Hey, you can’t have that attitude when handling firearms. ” That’s her job and that’s what they’re paying her to do. That’s the job she applied for. ”
Gutierrez-Reed’s attorneys told the jury that prosecutors did not present enough evidence to convict the armorer of manslaughter.
