Hirschi announced in the early afternoon that he had been suspended from Columbia University’s Barnard College for his involvement in the protests.

“I just received notification that I am one of three students who have been suspended for their solidarity with Palestinians facing genocide,” the 21-year-old wrote to X.

“I am a CU Apartheid Divest @ColumbiaSJP organizer. I have never received a reprimand or disciplinary warning in my 3 years at @BarnardCollege,” she added.

Protesters set up a makeshift tent city on the university’s Morningside campus on Wednesday, erecting dozens of tents in a scene reminiscent of the 2011 Occupy Wall Street takeover of Zuccotti Park.

Only this time, the protesters were not given the luxury of two months. Shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, Columbia University President Minoush Shafik quickly and decisively laid down the hammer, calling on the New York City Police Department to crack down on the encampment.

Jamal Bowman, a Democratic congressman from the Bronx and Westchester, weighed in on the X controversy, retweeting Hirschi and accusing Bernard of “political retaliation” for his suspension.

“the next day [Rep. Ilhan Omar] Did the school suspend my daughter for questioning Columbia’s leadership’s commitment to academic freedom of expression? It’s clear what’s going on here,” he wrote in an incendiary post.

“Our educational institutions must not engage in political retaliation.”
