Over 100 Anti-Israel Protesters Arrested at Columbia University

New York police arrested more than 100 anti-Israel demonstrators at Columbia University this week as the Ivy League president testified before a House committee about campus responses to anti-Semitism.

CNN affiliate WCBS reported that several people waving Palestinian flags got into a verbal confrontation with police officers who began barricading protesters. WCBS video showed pro-Palestinian demonstrators clashing with police and some lighting small fires. A woman was seen being led away in handcuffs.

After closing the gates, Columbia University only allowed protesters with Columbia IDs to enter the campus. President Shafiq sent a letter to NYPD officials on Thursday, urging the department to remove the trespassers.

“The actions of these individuals violate university rules and policies,” the president wrote. “The university issued multiple notices and warnings, informing camp participants that they must disperse or face immediate disciplinary action.”

Shafik directed the NYPD to disperse the protesters “out of great concern for the safety of the Columbia University campus.”

“I have taken this unusual step because this is an unusual situation,” Shafiq wrote. “The individuals who set up the encampment violated a long list of rules and policies.”

Isra Hirsi, the daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), was among those arrested Thursday and she is reportedly scheduled to be processed.
