Stephen A. Smith criticized the hush money trial against former President Trump in comments Thursday, saying he wants to see Trump “lose the right way.”
The sports commentator, who is primarily a Democrat, said he was “absolutely disgusted” by President Trump’s criminal trial, which began Monday with jury selection. Smith said he sees Democrats trying to politicize the court, as polls show they can’t stop the former president’s momentum.
“That seems to be their strategy, but let me tell you, it’s not working. It’s not working at all,” Smith told Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Thursday. “And to be honest, I may not be a supporter of Donald Trump, so I don’t care about the fact that it doesn’t work, but I want him to lose the right way. ”
“The reason I want him to lose is because you have better ideas than he does and you get your point across to the American people better than he does. That’s why I want him to lose.” I want it,” he continued, quoting President Biden. “I don’t want him to lose the way they’re going to let him lose.”
President Trump has made history as the first US president to face a criminal trial when his trial begins this week in Manhattan.
The lawsuit alleges that President Trump illegally used business records to pay off Michael Cohen, his former personal attorney who paid adult film actor Stormy Daniels to cover up an affair scandal before the 2016 presidential election. It is claimed that it was falsified.
Including this and other incidents, the former president faces 88 criminal charges in four separate indictments. It remains unclear whether his other cases will go to a jury before the November election, where he is the Republican nominee.
Smith pushed for President Trump’s trial to begin before the election, saying he started the trial on Monday despite Trump’s efforts to delay it out of fear that Biden would not be able to beat Trump in the polls. He claimed that he was just doing it.
According to The Hill/Decision Desk headquarters, Trump currently leads Biden by 0.08 percentage points in national polls. In a mid-March poll, 44% of respondents said their vote would not change even if President Trump were found guilty in the hush money trial.
