
Thousands of Colombians took to the streets on Sunday in the latest rebuke to leftist President Gustavo Petro’s reform policies.
Demonstrations took place in several cities, including the capital. Demonstrators filled Plaza Bolívar outside Bogota’s presidential palace.

Protests have been ongoing since former left-wing guerrillas came to power in 2022, but have recently gained momentum. Petro has floated the possibility of amending the constitution to promote social reforms, but has been unable to move forward in the face of opposition from a hostile parliament and conservative business groups.
Petro recently suffered a significant defeat when Colombia’s Congress refused to pass a bill that would increase state control over the country’s health care system, aimed at improving and reducing health care costs.

Following his defeat, Petro ordered the acquisition of two of the country’s top health insurance companies, on which millions of Colombians depend.
