Left-wing groups with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood are behind the Biden administration’s announcement of impending sanctions against Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) units made up of religious soldiers, NGO Monitor says.
As Breitbart News reported, Quote Axios’ Barak Rabid and the Biden administration are expected to announce sanctions against Neztah Yehuda (“Eternal Jewry”), a unit that includes ultra-Orthodox soldiers who are exempt from military service.
The sanctions are related to allegations that date back well before the war that began with the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack. Netzach Yehuda has since moved from the West Bank to the Golan Heights and is currently fighting in Gaza.
Israel’s political leaders from all walks of life almost universally condemned news of the sanctions, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling them a new “moral abasement.” And, as one U.S. analyst pointed out, the sanctions could expose U.S. soldiers to similar sanctions from other countries.
The IDF responded on Sunday, reporting that Netzach Yehuda is operating in Gaza and defending both the integrity of its forces and the IDF as a whole. The IDF said in a statement:
Soldiers from the IDF Netza Yehuda Battalion are currently participating in war operations in the Gaza Strip. The battalion conducts operations professionally and courageously, in accordance with the IDF Code of Ethics and in full compliance with international law. In recent years, the battalion’s soldiers have worked around the clock as the core of operational missions to protect Israeli civilians, while at the same time becoming the leading battalion when it comes to recruiting ultra-Orthodox nationals into the IDF. .
Reports of sanctions against the Netza Yehuda Battalion are currently unknown to the IDF. If such a decision is made on this issue, its consequences will be considered. IDF remains committed to continuing to investigate exceptional cases professionally and in accordance with the law.
