Umpire’s call left Phillies, White Sox announcers stunned

Even a particularly bad call didn’t slow down Zack Wheeler on Saturday.

In the game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox, when Wheeler was the starter, the home plate umpire made a bad mistake. It happened when a right-handed pitcher threw what was clearly a strike to Corey Lee, over the center of his at-bat and slightly over the top. Strike Zone.

However, home plate umpire Charlie Ramos called it a ball, much to the surprise of not only the Phillies’ broadcasters but also the White Sox staff.

The call was made in the top of the third inning, and after the pitch, Phillies right fielder Nick Castellanos was caught on camera raising his glove, and Phillies broadcaster Tom McCarthy said, “Nick Castellanos, like everyone else,… “I’m wondering where the pitch was.”

His partner Ben Davies added: “It’s baffling.”

Even more notable was the reaction from White Sox broadcasters Steve Stone and John Schliffen, who discussed the pitch not being a strike but said the scuffle team “definitely accepts” the bad call. agreed.

This did not affect the outcome of the game, as Wheeler pitched a shutout in the eighth inning of the game, which the Phillies won 9-5.

The decision came on the same day that the Orioles-Royals game started off wildly, with home plate umpire Ryan Brackney making an improper call on the first pitch of the game.

Kansas City’s Cole Regans threw a fastball up the middle to Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson. But Brackney called it a ball.

Ryan Lefebvre called the Royals game for Bally Sports and said, “The fastball is going to be in the middle of the first pitch.”

His partner, former MLB player Rex Hudler, responded with a laugh. Oh my God. It’s not pitch 1. ”

The Reagans lost 9-7 and were knocked out in the second round.
