Former President Trump is holding President Biden accountable for legislation that could potentially ban TikTok in the United States after the House passed it over the weekend as part of a massive foreign aid package.
“I want everyone to know, especially young people, that Crooked Joe Biden is responsible for banning TikTok,” President Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Monday.
Trump’s opposition to a potential ban on TikTok marks a major shift from the position he held during his presidency. In 2020, the former president issued an executive order forcing TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell its U.S. assets, but the order was later blocked by a court.
The TikTok bill, which is currently being introduced in the Senate along with long-sought aid legislation for Ukraine and Israel, would require ByteDance to sell the app within about a year or face a U.S. ban. will be faced with.
Mr. Biden has signaled support for the measure, but Mr. Trump opposed a possible ban on TikTok, arguing that it would benefit Facebook.
“[Biden] President Trump is shutting it down to help his friends on Facebook get richer, more dominant, and continue to fight the Republican Party, possibly illegally.” he said on Monday.
“That’s election interference!” he continued. “Many people, especially young people, must remember this when they vote on Election Day, November 5th. We must remember that this is a serious threat to democracy.”
Facebook banned President Trump from entering the country in January 2021 following the Capitol riot, during which hundreds of his supporters tried to block the certification of the 2020 election results. The former president spent months spreading false claims about the election on social media ahead of the storming of the Capitol.
Facebook’s parent company Meta reinstated Trump’s account last year. Before announcing his opposition to the ban, Trump also met with Jeffrey Yass, a major TikTok investor and Republican donor, but said the summit had nothing to do with his decision. .
