Tyrese Maxey wins Most Improved Player with Donte DiVincenzo ineligible

Tyrese Maxey could have something over the Knicks’ heads after his dramatic turn in Game 2 on Monday at Madison Square Garden.

The 76ers guard won the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award for the 2023-24 season, while Knicks hero Donte DiVincenzo was ineligible for the award due to recent league rules. .

DiVincenzo averaged 15.5 points and made a Knicks-record 283 3-pointers this season, but he must play at least 65 games in a season to earn the award, adding one total to his total. For a game to count, a player must log at least 20 minutes of playing time.

DiVincenzo missed the 65-game requirement because he didn’t play at least 20 minutes a game.

Knicks guard Jalen Brunson received 11 votes (three for first place) and finished fifth in the voting.

Maxey earned this honor after ranking 11th in the NBA in points per game and 20th in assists per game while recording three games in which he scored 50 or more points, tied for the most in the NBA.

His 212 3-pointers set a new career high and was up from the 160 he made last season.

The award comes after Maxey and the 76ers felt like they didn’t have a proper swing in the final moments of Game 2 of the first round of Monday night’s playoff series, which the Knicks won 104-101. It’s not a consolation prize. .

DiVincenzo played the heroic role by making a go-ahead 3-pointer with just seconds remaining, giving the Knicks the lead after a close 6-0 game.

However, controversy arose as the referees appeared to miss a number of fouls that should have been called during the sequence, apparently resulting in a timeout for the 76ers.

The NBA released its Last Two Minutes (L2M) report on Tuesday, ruling that Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson should have been called for fouls on Maxey in the moments leading up to DiVincenzo’s go-ahead bucket, dismissing the 76ers’ appeal. Admitted.
