Bottlenose dolphin found shot to death in southwest Louisiana

A reward of up to $20,000 is being offered for information leading to a criminal conviction or civil penalty regarding a dolphin found shot to death in southwestern Louisiana.

Federal wildlife officials said in a news release Monday that a juvenile bottlenose dolphin was found shot to death on March 13 along the coast of Cameron Parish. The dolphin was found on West Mays Beach and the stranding was reported to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which said an autopsy revealed the dolphin had multiple bullet holes in its brain, spinal cord and heart.

According to NOAA, harming or killing wild dolphins is prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Violations are subject to civil or criminal prosecution, with fines of up to $100,000 and imprisonment of up to one year.

NOAA Law Enforcement is investigating the killing. Anyone with information is asked to call the NOAA Enforcement Hotline at 800-853-1964. Tips can be left anonymously, but callers must include their name and contact information to be eligible for rewards.
