Clarke Schmidt’s Yankees outing spoiled by sixth-inning woes

The same thing happened to Clark Schmidt.

For the first five innings, he ran around the Athletics lineup, giving up two hits and showing the growth that surfaced last year and carried over into his early-season appearances.

However, the 6th inning.

Schmidt punched Ryan Noda. Tyler Nevin doubled.

Brent Rooker hit a ball over the left field fence.

That’s it.

“Staff-wise, nothing went down,” coach Aaron Boone said. “Just a little bit of execution and maybe pitch selection.”

Schmidt’s goal of pitching six full innings for the first time in 2024 crumbled between four Athletics batters, and he still won (17-8) during the Yankees’ 7-3 victory over Oakland on Tuesday. I picked it up. His unraveling at Yankee Stadium captured the next hurdle for the 28-year-old to overcome.

He made his fifth start this year, pitching six innings and posting an ERA of 54.00, but his performance worsened as he allowed three runs with just one out.

“It might be a matter of pitch selection,” Schmidt said of pitches that go deep into games. “It might also be about staying within yourself and not trying to over-execute and just going out and doing your job. … I think players tend to do that, especially at the end of games. As for me.”

The pitch that hit Noda and the one that connected with Nevin were two “frustrating” pitches for Schmidt, but he still started 30 consecutive games and allowed three or fewer runs, tied for second in MLB with Blake Snell. It became. He has moved into the top two spots behind Sonny Gray since the beginning of last season.

He struck out at least six batters in three consecutive games.

Oakland went hitless for 12 consecutive at-bats until Lawrence Butler led off with a single in the fifth inning, but that was quickly canceled out by a double play, making it a five-pitch inning for Schmidt.

However, that did not prevent the issue of the sixth inning from resurfacing.

Following Schmidt’s five-inning, one-run, five-hit pitch in his first start in 2024 against the Astros, he hit two doubles against three batters.

Two games later against the Guardians, Boone separated Schmidt with two singles in the sixth inning.

The same problem occurred again on Friday, when a home run and a double were hit in the frame.

Still, Schmidt, who was stuck in the bullpen two seasons ago, continues to emerge as a reliable starter for the Yankees.

Last year, he added cutter to his mix.

His flash became more consistent.

And at this point, extending those activities into games will only help make his comeback trajectory even bigger.

“Obviously it leaves a sour taste in your mouth. That’s baseball,” Schmidt said.
