The previous record for starting a draft was for an offensive player for seven consecutive years. In 2021, cornerback Jaycee Horn broke the streak with the No. 8 pick. CB Patrick Surtain II followed next.

The 1999 NFL Draft was also close, with seven of the first eight picks going on offense. The cornerbacks again broke up the run as Champ Bailey finished with a 7. In 1983, there was only one defender among the first nine picks. In 1971, there was also one defender in the top nine.
