Texas authorities have released details about the death of a Harris County deputy who was struck by a truck while working earlier this week.
According to a traffic report from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy John Codu, 50, was investigating a minor crash in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 around 9:36 a.m. Tuesday when a Chevrolet・He was struck and killed by a man driving a Silverado 2500. He said.
Kodu positioned his patrol car on the left shoulder of the highway and the right side of the car partially blocked the first northbound lane before he went out to investigate.
The vehicle’s emergency lights were activated, the report said.

Less than 10 minutes later, a white Silverado approached the scene, driving in the lane Kodu’s car had been blocking. The driver’s identity has not been released, but the report says he is a “known male.”
The driver made a hands-free call on his cell phone as he approached the area and took “erroneous evasive maneuvers” to avoid colliding with Kodu’s car, the report said.
In doing so, he drove into the grassy median that separates the northbound and southbound lanes. Kodu was standing there.
The deputy was struck by the right front of the truck, the report said.

Kodu was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital Texas Medical Center, where he later died.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the department was “deeply saddened” by his death and a procession was held in his honor Thursday. FOX 26 Houston reported that Kodu worked for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for 20 years.
