Freight train carrying gasoline, propane derails near Arizona-New Mexico line

A freight train derailed near the Arizona-New Mexico border on Friday, halting traffic on Interstate 40 as the region recovers from severe weather.

New Mexico State Police said they worked with multiple other law enforcement agencies to respond to a freight train along the interstate Friday night.

“NMSP was at the scene of the train derailment accident. multiple other agencies along milepost 8 of Interstate 40 near the Arizona state line,” the department said in a press release.

The agency said there were no reports of injuries even though the train derailed near a busy interstate.

Officials said the train was carrying gasoline and odorless propane, which caused it to catch fire quickly.

Smith said the derailment occurred after a tornado tore through northeast Lincoln on Friday afternoon.

NMSP said the interstate was closed in all directions as authorities worked to extinguish the fire.

“Interstate 40 is closed in all directions in Arizona and New Mexico,” the department said. “In New Mexico, traffic is being diverted westbound at State Route 40 Exit 20 to Route 491, to Ganado-bound Route 264, and to Route 191. In Arizona, traffic is being diverted at Chambers It will be detoured from Highway 191 to Ganado and from Arizona State Route 264 to Route 491.” ”
