Two teams tried to acquire Justin Herbert before drafting quarterbacks: report

The Los Angeles Chargers are rebuilding but not rebuilding that Quite a rebuild.

This offseason alone, the Chargers parted ways with Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Austin Ekeler. The departure of these teams took place after the 5-11 season.

2023 was a tumultuous year for the Chargers, who trailed the Jacksonville Jaguars by 27 points in the playoffs the previous year.

After an embarrassing loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, they fired controversial head coach Brandon Staley, and to make matters worse, Justin Herbert’s season was cut short due to injury.

They hired Jim Harbaugh, who spent nine seasons at the University of Michigan, going 15-0 and winning the national championship the most recent season. He doesn’t want a new quarterback, even though it offers a new identity.

ESPN reported Both the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings reportedly had discussions with the Chargers about acquiring Herbert in the weeks leading up to the draft.

The Pats took Drake Maye with Thursday’s No. 3 pick, but the Vikings moved up one spot and took Harbaugh quarterback J.J. McCarthy from Michigan.

Chargers general manager Joe Horitz acknowledged that the team tried, but did not say which team tried, and it was ultimately unsuccessful.

“No, no, I was asked if I could be considered by some guys at the combine, but they were shot down right away. No, that’s never an option,” he said.

Los Angeles selected the Oregon product with the sixth pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He is the third quarterback in his class, joining Joe Burrow and Tua Tagovailoa. He signed a contract extension worth more than $260 million before the 2023 season.

In 13 games, he threw for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. However, his 65.1 completion percentage and 241.1 yards per game were both career lows and his worst season pace to date.

But the Chargers gave Herbert some help in the second round by taking Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkie, who joined Quentin Johnston in last year’s first-round pick.
