Former President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (Republican) held a private meeting in Miami on Sunday to bridge the gap between political conflicts. The Washington Post reported.
The hours-long meeting was brokered by political allies hoping to defuse the once-heated conflict, and resulted in Mr. DeSantis agreeing to support the former president, the Post said.
Mr. DeSantis’ network of donors and influence among prominent conservatives wary of Mr. Trump could be a big boon for the candidate’s campaign. As the 2024 election approaches, Trump has consistently lagged behind President Biden in fundraising.
The men said they had not spoken since DeSantis withdrew from the Republican presidential race in January. Mr. DeSantis failed to capitalize on the high expectations of his first national election and withdrew from the race after the Iowa caucuses. He supported Trump, who defeated former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley in the primary.
Despite the support, DeSantis did not support the Trump campaign and made several negative comments about the former president. A month after he withdrew from the race, Trump aide Chris Lacivita called the governor a “sad little man.”
The détente could also be an indication of Mr. DeSantis’ future intentions. His term-limited gubernatorial seat, along with Haley, is seen as the top choice for Republicans in 2028.
