U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas Warned Against Taking Ammo to Turks and Caicos

On September 22, 2023, a travel alert from the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas warns Americans from entering the Turks and Caicos Islands because the penalty for carrying guns or ammunition is “12 years in prison.” I warned you to check your baggage beforehand.

caveat Began:

Firearms, ammunition, and other weapons are prohibited in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). TCI authorities strictly enforce all firearms laws. If he travels to TCI with a firearm, ammunition, or other weapon, the minimum penalty is that he will be jailed for 12 years.

We would like to remind travelers that even if you declare to your airline that you have a weapon in your luggage, you will not be allowed to carry the weapon into TCI and will be subject to arrest.

The embassy states: “Before departing for TCI, we strongly recommend that you carefully check your luggage for leaked ammunition or forgotten weapons.” If you bring firearms or ammunition to TCI, you will not be released from detention. cannot be guaranteed. ”

On April 12, 2024, Oklahoma resident Ryan Watson was arrested while leaving the Turks and Caicos Islands to return to the United States after four rounds of hunting ammunition were found in his luggage.

CBS News I got it. Watson said he believes the ammunition may have been left in his bag after going on a hunting trip to Texas.

Watson is currently free on bail, but according to USA Today report He cannot leave the Turks and Caicos Islands as his trial is scheduled for June 7, 2024.

In addition to not being able to leave the country, he “must submit his passport and travel documents to the court and report to the police twice a week as his case moves through the system.”

On April 24, 2024, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a new travel alert for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Alarm again I felt stressed,”If you bring firearms or ammunition into the Turks and Caicos Islands, even inadvertently, we cannot secure your release from custody. You are subject to TCI laws and must follow local law enforcement procedures. ”
