The judge overseeing the hush money trial in New York announced Tuesday that former President Trump will be allowed to attend his son’s graduation next month.
Judge Juan Marchan said the former president would be able to attend his youngest son Barron Trump’s high school graduation on May 17. Earlier this month, Judge Marchand deferred ruling on whether Trump could attend graduation.
Mr. Trump had previously slammed Mr. Marchand for delaying the sentencing, accusing the judge of potentially preventing him from attending. Under New York state law, Mr. Trump is required to attend the entire trial unless he receives special permission from the judge to be absent.
“I was looking forward to the graduation ceremony where my mother and father would be in attendance,” President Trump told reporters at the time. “It looks like the judge won’t let me get away with this fraud. It’s a fraud trial.”
Other Republicans and Trump allies also criticized Marchand for delaying the decision. Trump’s other son, Eric Trump, said earlier this month that the judge was “really cruel to not allow his father to attend his son’s graduation.”
His son’s graduation ceremony is not the only time President Trump has requested a break from the trial. Marchand ruled that President Trump could not attend the Supreme Court’s oral arguments in the presidential immunity case held last week, arguing that former presidents are required to attend hush money trials, unlike high court proceedings. did.
While Trump is stuck in a Manhattan courtroom for trial, lawyers representing him are working on other legal battles. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee also blamed the hush money trial for keeping him away from his campaign for much of the next few weeks, saying it was politically motivated.
