Johnson, along with Democrats and establishment Republicans, passed President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda that many conservatives have long opposed. Mr. Green particularly highlighted three pieces of legislation that Mr. Johnson brought to fruition.
- government funding
- Surveillance of American citizens
- Funding Ukraine without securing borders
In response to Greene’s announcement, Johnson ultimately condemned her decision to carry out the threat. “This motion is wrong for the Republican conference, wrong for the Republican organization, and wrong for the country,” she argued in her statement.
Some establishment Republicans believe Mr. Johnson should remain in office, fearing that a motion to resign could hurt House Republicans’ chances of retaining the House majority.
Some America First Republicans say they should move forward with a motion to put Johnson on record for working with Democrats to keep his job. Democrats are expected to vote in line with some establishment Republicans to protect Mr. Johnson.
Mr. Johnson sought to use the November election as a reason for Democrats and establishment Republicans to keep him in power, even if his fundraising numbers were relatively weak.
“I have to do my job. We have to do what we believe is right,” Johnson said. claimed at a press conference on Tuesday. “To keep this job going and get it done, we need people who are serious about what they do here. So I have to do what I believe is right every day and let the chips fall where they fall.”
