Democrats Should Skip Chicago, Hold Zoom Convention Again

Democrats should cancel their national convention in Chicago in August and hold a meeting on Zoom, as they did during the 2020 campaign and the coronavirus pandemic — for the sake of the city, and for the sake of the city. Also for the sake of the country.

Let’s set aside for a moment the obvious problems of holding a political show in a city that has become synonymous with Democratic Party mismanagement. crime wave. School that failed. The immigration crisis – it’s all a Republican talking point. Lord knows what drove President Joe Biden to pick Chicago, a dysfunctional deep blue state already locked down in November. In any case, he now has a golden opportunity to undo a terrible political mistake.

Chicago would be a fitting battlefield for the turmoil of 1968, when anti-war demonstrators rioted in Grant Park and engaged police in the streets. The anti-Israel mobs that have occupied college campuses, disrupting classes, mocking Jews, vandalizing buildings, and assaulting journalists, will converge on the Windy City like the Great Chicago Fire. They intend to impose their policies on the party agenda and punish Mr. Biden for his perceived support for Israel.

Never mind that Biden has been slamming Israel and its democratically elected government for months, denying the victory over Hamas for which hundreds of Israelis have already given their lives. Activists reversed reality.

Clashes between campus and local police are just a warm-up for what lies ahead in Chicago. The thugs who attacked me at UCLA last week were highly trained. The White House was ambivalent. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Civil Rights Director Kristen Clark did nothing to investigate the organizations and donors who violated Jewish civil rights in a campaign organized across the country. I won’t be able to make it in time for the August meeting.

There may be some things, but schadenfreude For Republicans, some things still go beyond politics as they watch the Democratic Party self-destruct, repeat the disastrous history of 1968 and hurt Biden’s re-election chances.

And one of them is a love for my homeland, a homeland that my family embraced when we immigrated in the late 1970s. I grew up in the western and northern suburbs and loved Chicago with all my heart. I still do.

Looking back, it was the ideal time to be there. The 1980s were the era of Ferris Bueller and other John Hughes masterpieces. Mike Ditka led the Chicago Bears to glory after decades of slump. Air Jordan landed in the 1990s, bringing an NBA championship to the city. The Bulls’ dynasty coincided with an economic renaissance, which Democrats were rightly able to celebrate at the 1996 Democratic National Convention, which I covered on college radio.

But ever since the Daleys left City Hall, despite their corruption, Chicago has been in a doldrums. Radicals embody and take over the ill-fated administrations of Rahm Emanuel, Lori Lightfoot, and Brandon Johnson. They failed to address the Black Lives Matter riots that devastated the Magnificent Mile and local neighborhoods alike. Who would expect Chicago to do any better when faced with mobs of terrorist sympathizers on its city streets?

No, Democrats should do what they did in 2020 when they held a virtual convention in Milwaukee. Create amazing videos about your city’s rich history: its rise from the ashes, its bold ambitions, and its rich diversity. The rest will be done via Zoom. After all, it worked in 2020. Save Chicago from violence. From the floor fight. From the inevitable attack on the synagogue.

This is the right thing to do politically and morally. The Democratic Party’s support base is too dangerous.
