Rays’ Ryan Pepiot struck with 7th hardest-hit ball in MLB this season, forced to leave game

New York Mets outfielder Starling Marte hit the seventh-strongest ball in MLB this season, but unfortunately the ball hit Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryan Peppiot and was forced to leave the field.

In the bottom of the second inning, Marte found the barrel of Pepiot’s 89 mph slider and sent it flying back into place. But as luck would have it, it was a low-line drive that smashed him in the foot and veered from center field to third base.

Everyone on the Mets was safe because Marte got the bases loaded first. But no one was paying attention to the situation. All I knew was that Pepiot was okay.

A Rays trainer quickly came out to check on Pepiott. After Peppiot got up from the turf, he was limping around the mound.

It looked like he was just trying to get sent off, so he could have stayed in the game.

Punches are exchanged on the bench, clearing the melee between Brewers and Rays.

But after two warm-up pitches, Pepiott left the field under his own power in the top of the third inning, officially ending his day.

Peppiot’s final lineup consisted of pitching two innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs, three strikeouts, and one walk.

The Rays initially diagnosed Peppiot with a left foot contusion after X-rays came back negative.

Pepiott pitched in 17 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022-2023 before pitching well with the Rays in his first year with the team. He had a 3.12 ERA in six starts (34.2 innings) before Sunday.

Pepiott is currently considered a one-day player, and the Rays will certainly want him back on the field for his next scheduled start.
