Juan Soto and run prevention have been staples for the Yankees this season, and they did that again Sunday.
Nestor Cortez was a familiar face, and he was great at Yankee Stadium. Soto once again showed his fortitude in the clutch. And on a brutal day for baseball, the Yankees defeated the Tigers 5-2, but the game was only called off after the eighth inning due to bad weather that continued from the first pitch.
With this win, the Yankees moved 10 games above .500 for the first time this season. They’re there because Cortez and the rest of the staff helped hold opponents to three runs or less an MLB-high 23 times. And Soto was able to spend most of the rainy, chilly afternoon fretting about balls and strikes with home plate hitter Edwin Jimenez before hitting a tying left-to-left RBI triple in his final at-bat. , a seven-inning showdown with Andrew Chafin.
Soto has put a runner in scoring position against left-handed pitchers 10 times this year. He went 5-for-7 with two walks, no strikeouts, one sacrifice fly, and 10 RBIs.
“[I want him up] under any circumstances. He’s a great player, but I think there’s no question he loves being in the moment,” manager Aaron Boone said.
Soto’s offensive heroics and run prevention helped the Yankees beat the Orioles and A-listers even though Gerrit Cole hasn’t pitched this year and Aaron Judge hasn’t produced much. It helps explain why he holds the record for the most wins in the league. But if you’re looking for a reason why the Yankees can do much better than 10 games above .500 this year, a reason why they could outperform the Orioles, and a reason to dream big, this weekend The ray of hope came from Cole and Judge.
Cole took off the mound for the first time since spring training was suspended due to nerve inflammation in his precious right elbow. His arm is still in the baby stage, but a mid-June return is within his reach. And last week, the judges looked like judges.
“I think we’re playing well as a group,” Cole said. “There’s no denying that we’ve been playing good baseball.”
It starts from the beginning. Let’s say Cole had a 2.99 ERA. We think it was a great season for the Aces. The entire Yankees staff, with the exception of the 2023 AL Cy Young Award winner, has a 2.99 ERA through 36 games.
And this group did something else worthwhile. It didn’t explode. not even once. The Yankees and Orioles are the only teams this year where every starter lasted at least four innings. This allowed the Yankees to prevent their bullpen from being overexposed, even though they played a lot of close games.
Cortez was great on Sunday, which was to be expected since he was in the Bronx. Cortes started four games at Yankee Stadium, posting a 1.59 ERA, .162 batting average, and 28 strikeouts to one walk in 28¹/₃ innings pitched. And that walk came in the bottom of the fourth inning against Riley Greene. At that moment, Cortez was almost halfway back into the dugout and thought he had struck out Green two pitches earlier.
Tariq Skubal lived up to Boone’s pregame hype, so Cortez needed to be good. “He has the best ability in baseball right now.” The left-handed pitcher entered the game with a 1.72 ERA and had a career-high 12 strikeouts.

However, Judge hit a two-out home run in the first inning. Before the day was over, Judge added a double against Skubal and also walked Chaffin. His batting average is still only .220. But in his last nine games, Judge is 11-for-31 (.355 batting average) with three home runs (and the first ejection of his career).
The idea for this Yankees offense was for Soto to pair up with Judge and form a left-right combination as intense as the game. But it wasn’t until last week that it became more clear. The Yankees need their offense to be a more consistent threat, as Cole still needs to throw a few bullpen sessions before graduating to a live hitter, and perhaps some regression to the mean for the rotation. Yes, it revolves around Soto and Judge being 1-2. The Yankees will solidify their batting lineup to 2 wins and 3 losses so that they can take the lead in some games.
The Yankees achieved an MLB record for the 27th time in 36 games, with a game decided by three points or less. Ian Hamilton allowed two runners on Cortez in the seventh inning and scored to tie the game. Soto is now ready for the bottom of the inning. Then, after the Tigers came up to bat in the eighth inning and the field turned into a swamp, the game was briefly stopped and then abandoned.
The Yankees won for the familiar reasons of not allowing runs and Soto. That allowed the club to survive even without the best of the judges and calls. This allowed the Yanks to dream of what would happen if they finally got the best from both stars.
