Congress should stop aviation regulators from holding back DC’s closest airport

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, known by its airport code DCA, is the closest airport to downtown Washington, DC and Arlington, Virginia, just minutes by train or car. Convenient for business travelers, tourists, and anyone traveling to and from the metropolitan area. Needless to say, DCA is a vital part of the local economy, and enhancing affordable air travel to the region is key.

Unfortunately, DCA is subject to what are called “border rules.” This rule was designed decades ago to artificially limit air traffic in DCA and protect other airports in the region. Through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill, Congress can remove this unnecessary hurdle and make life easier for locals and visitors alike.

The U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee passed a bipartisan provision to add five additional flights at DCA in the FAA reauthorization bill’s markup. Virginia’s congressional delegation and the entire Congress should support including these flights in the final bill.

This is an opportunity for Virginia’s leaders to reevaluate and revitalize the region’s economic opportunities. This is an opportunity to foster further business development not only for the commonwealth but for the diverse businesses that make up its economic environment, including Asian American-owned businesses.

Improving access and convenience for all travelers using the region’s airports is essential. The Washington, DC area is home to two major airports: DCA and Dulles International Airport, the latter of which is located more than 32 miles away in Fairfax County, Virginia. Some people take Maryland’s Baltimore-Washington International Airlines, which is about 60 miles away and closer to Baltimore, Maryland.

Although Dulles serves the area well, DCA’s location naturally makes it a more convenient option for tourists and business leaders who often have appointments on Capitol Hill.

Boundary rules were first created to protect the growth of Dulles after it was built in the 1960s. Dulles has experienced significant growth since its founding. record growth Numerous international and domestic routes have been added in recent years. It’s clear to anyone who’s ever set foot in Dulles that the airport no longer needs protection, thanks to Loudoun County’s ever-growing population and status as a major regional and international hub. is.

Meanwhile, DCA remains the only airport in the country subject to boundary rules. This limits competition in DCA, forcing Northern Virginia residents as well as travelers from outside the border to pay significantly higher airfares and much higher transit fees. This wastes valuable time, adds transportation costs, and is the main reason why the Washington, DC area ranks number two. most expensive compared to other top metro areas across the country.

The prohibitive costs and complex logistics of traveling to this region negatively impact tourism and local businesses in Northern Virginia. Recognizing the far-reaching effects of this unnecessary restriction, we strongly support bringing these outdated boundary rules into the modern era.

Aviation industry leaders, including Acting FAA Administrator michael whitaker former FAA Administrator And a 30-year aviation industry veteran and certified air traffic controller publicly acknowledged that increasing flights at DCA is indeed possible and safe for travelers.

Congress can expedite these changes by modernizing boundary rules and ensuring five additional intraboundary and extraboundary flights at DCA as part of the FAA reauthorization bill. This will foster business development, enhance tourism at Potomac Yard and throughout the region, and create a ripple effect of economic benefits for Virginia.
