Republicans Call on FDIC Chairman to Resign in Wake of ‘Abusive’ Conduct at Agency

An independent review of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), conducted by Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, was described as “hostile, abusive and unprofessional.” The report outlined numerous incidents of stalking, harassment, homophobia and other violations of employee policies.

The Associated Press explained:

The incidents ranged from field offices to headquarters in Washington, D.C., and described a “‘misogynistic,’ ‘patriarchal,’ ‘closed,’ and ‘old-fashioned’ workplace culture, where favoritism is common.” ‘It happened inside a boys’ club.’ The wagons are circling around the manager, and a senior executive known for pursuing romantic relationships with his subordinates enjoys long careers with no apparent consequences,” the report states. .

More than 500 workers report harassment, discrimination and other issues

The report also cited Mr. Gruenberg by name for a “highly disturbing exchange” between the chairman and his subordinate.

The report said Gruenberg’s “reputation calls into question the credibility of the leadership’s response to the crisis and his ‘moral authority’ to lead cultural change.”

Republicans called for Gruenberg’s resignation, citing scandals under his watch.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) said, “The FDIC is in disarray under Marty Gruenberg’s failed leadership. He must resign.”

Representative French Hill (R-Arkansas), Vice Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said: I have written“I recently met with Chairman Gruenberg regarding allegations related to the FDIC’s management. I was very disappointed in his responses to my questions, but upon reading the independent report released today, , we believe it is in the best interest of the FDIC, its employees, and the industry for him to resign.”

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said the report “makes clear that new leadership is needed at the FDIC.” Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking Committee, said, “I hope that Chairman Gruenberg can move forward with the leadership that the FDIC deserves and desperately needs.” The time has come to resign.”
