The conservative group FreedomWorks has announced that it will cease operations due to former President Trump’s divisive influence on the Republican Party.
“We are disbanding,” said the group’s president, Adam Brandon. He said this in an interview with Politico. “You’ll see an immediate effect.”
The Hill reached out to FreedomWorks, and Politico reported Tuesday that the company’s board of directors voted unanimously to shut down the organization.
Wednesday will be the last day at work for about 25 employees, who will receive several months’ worth of pay and benefits.
Brandon told Politico that the conservative advocacy group laid off 40% of its staff in March 2023, and its total revenue has fallen by about half since 2022.
He said ideological changes promoted during President Trump’s tenure led to the decision to dissolve the company. After Trump’s victory, there was a “huge rift” between the company’s liberal principles and its members’ MAGA ideology, he said.
“Many of our constituencies are aging, so new activists are struggling. [with] Trump, they tend to be more populist,” Brandon said. “So when I looked at the bass, it was a little weird.”
He said FreedomWorks’ staff was divided between MAGA Trump supporters and “Never Trump” Republicans. Mr. Brandon specifically wanted the group to work for Mr. Trump, saying the group was seeing a “decline in conservative donors” and that the group was “on the decline” on topics they agreed with. only said he supports Trump.
He said it was an “impossible situation” because some donors would say they didn’t do enough to support Trump and others would say Trump was doing too much. Ta. Brandon, who has been with FreedomWorks since 2005 and served as its president for about 10 years, told the outlet that he plans to create a new organization focused on politically independent millennials and Gen Z.
