Dog rescued after falling off 50-foot cliff at Connecticut quarry

He’s a lucky dog.

A dog missing for several days was rescued Tuesday after falling from a 50-foot cliff in a Connecticut quarry.

Animal Control Officer Lindsey Barr said in a post that the North Canaan Animal Shelter received a call Monday night from a man who said he heard a dog barking while walking near the quarry on Lower Road. He said he had been contacted.

She hitchhiked the quarry owners to the bottom to see if they could find the pup, but although she could hear barking, she was nowhere to be found.

The shelter called a local man using a drone to see if it could detect signs of fever, but was unsuccessful.

The agency later learned that Rippy, a 30-pound terrier mix, disappeared in the area on Saturday and its owner was contacted.

On Tuesday, men working at the quarry reported hearing the barking again during their lunch break, and finally spotted Rippy on a cliff and called animal control, who retrieved the puppy.

The Northwest Rope Rescue Team, North Canaan Fire Company and North Canaan Ambulance assisted in the daring rescue effort.

“Two members of the rope rescue team fought off the dog Rippy, who fell off a cliff and became stuck about 50 feet below. He may have been trapped there since Saturday night. No one knows that,” Barr wrote.
