Holland Taylor, Ana Villafañe to play lawmakers seemingly inspired by Pelosi, AOC

Holland Taylor and Broadway star Ana Villafañe star as a pair of congressmen in a new play inspired by real-life congresswomen Nancy Pelosi of California and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York. He is scheduled to play the leading role.

The off-Broadway production of “N/A,” announced Friday, stars Taylor from “The Morning Show” as “N” and Gloria Estefan from “On Your Feet!” It was announced that Villafañe will play the role of “A”.

The show, which is scheduled to begin previews June 11 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City, is a play about “power, politics, and dangerous things” that features “generations apart”. The path to progress described as the story of “Two Women in Congress.” ”

According to a news release, “‘N/A’ is a whiplash battle of wills and intellects between N, the first female Speaker of the House of Representatives, and A, the youngest ever elected member of Congress. ”.

“This mesmerizing two-handed weapon shines a light on what many consider the most powerful woman in American history and the once-in-a-generation political talent who rebelled against her.”

Pelosi made history as the first woman to hold the speaker’s gavel in 2007, but she resigned as House Democratic leader last year. Ocasio-Cortez, then 29, became the youngest female member of Congress in 2018.

The production team behind “N/A” said the show was “inspired by real-life people and events,” but promotional materials do not mention Pelosi or Ocasio-Cortez by name. A representative for the show told ITK that although the characters are fictional, “you can draw your own conclusions.”

This isn’t the first time Taylor, 81, has played a famous politician. In 2013, she was nominated for a Tony Award for writing and starring in the Broadway production of “Anne,” about the late Texas Governor Ann Richards (Democratic Party).

Scheduled to run for eight weeks, “N/A” is directed by Mario, a congressional staffer turned playwright who once worked as an aide to former Rep. Connie Morella (R-Md.). Correa wrote the script.
