The WNBA is going through a very profitable and exciting time for the league. A growing loyal fan base and the addition of new stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese means the sport’s growth will only accelerate from here. All these good things are happening in the WNBA, and the league is expanding and heading north.
The WNBA is moving to Toronto, according to Ben Steiner. Kilmer Sports Group, led by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Chairman Larry Tannenbaum, is leading the effort to establish a new WNBA team in Toronto. Steiner said the new team will launch in 2026 and the arena will be the Coca-Cola Coliseum.
This isn’t the first time the league has moved up north. The WNBA held an exhibition game in 2023 between the Chicago Sky and the Minnesota Lynx, and Scotiabank Arena was packed to capacity. This preseason, the Los Angeles Sparks and Seattle Storm will play at Rogers Place.
With the announcement of this new team, the WNBA now has 14 teams, including Bay Area expansion teams. According to the WNBA website, the new Bay Area team is scheduled to play at Chase Center starting in 2025, one year earlier than the Toronto team. Neither team has a name yet, but an announcement will be made in due course.
These are important times for the WNBA, and everyone involved in the sport continues to grow as more teams enter the fold.
